‘54 Chevrolet Panel Truck Blues
I returned to Dave Ray's studio in 1978 and did a solo album of all original tunes, most of them about the residents and environment of the south side of a town called Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.  The funky, clunky sound you hear is an acoustic foot piano.  It was retired after being crushed in its packing case by United Airlines, damn their eyes!

‘54 Chevrolet Panel Truck Blues  copyright 1976 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
Hey, I wanna take you for a ride in my Chevrolet / Hey, I wanna take you for a ride in my Chevrolet / I’m gonna sing a little song I got something I wanna say / It’s got four on the floor, ain’t very fast / Probably uses more oil than it uses gas / Hey, I wanna take you for a ride in my Chevrolet / I’m gonna sing a little song I got something I wanna say / It’s a panel truck if you know what I mean / A fine place for romance without being seen / Hey, I wanna take you for a ride in my Chevrolet / I’m gonna sing a little song I got something I wanna say

You Say You Love Me, But You Don't  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
You say you love me, but you don't / You say you will, but you know that you won't / You know it makes me crazy when my prospects are hazy / You say you love me but you don't / You say you're mine, but you're not / You been slippin and a-slidin a lot / There's no erasin' the fact that you been chasin' / You say you're mine, but you're not / And it seems to me, it's plain to see / You're trying to fool me into thinking that you're mine, / But who's that man that you been winkin' at? / Come on, admit that I'm right / So we can call it off and end it all tonight / Your devious scheme is givin me the screaming meemies / Come on admit that I'm right

I Can't Leave the Night Life Behind  copyright 1975 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
chorus:
I can't seem to leave this old night life behind / The music and women and the whiskey, beer and wine / The pool and the pin ball and the cards and the darts / This night life is breaking up my home / And my sweet baby's heart
/ I walk 'neath the neon and nod to the boys / A child with a charge card in a store full of toys / A girl at the bar gives a 'come hither' sign . I can't leave this night life behind / chorus: / You'd think she would learn after all of these years / I'm home at the sunrise, greeted by her tears / I know I should quit, but there’s no will in my mind and / I can't leave this night life behind

See That Reefer Man  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
See that reefer man, big bag of reefer in his hand / Try to sell some when he can / He's that dirty old reefer man / See the people gasp and choke, tryin' to hold that toke / Sayin' "this must be some kinda joke, / It's that dirty old reefer man!" / When he comes to town people shake their heads n' stare / But when he starts to move that stuff around / He's suddenly welcome anywhere / Cuz when they're gettin high, they don't try to justify / They just lay back and close their eyes and say / "It's that dirty old reefer man!" / Girl named Sue, feelin down and blue / Man, she wanted to end it all / Took a great big hit of some dynamite stuff / Now she's out there rockin' and havin' a ball / When you a light a spliff or a big reefer fag / And hit down on a heavy drag/ It will put you in the bag and you'll say / That dirty old reefer man!"

Sometime Woman  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
I got a sometime woman, sometimes she’s good to me / I got a sometime woman, sometimes she’s good to me / When my sometime woman’s bad, she sometimes puts me down on my knee / Sometimes she makes me happy, sometimes she makes me sad / She’s the best old sometime girl this sometime man has had / I got a sometime woman, sometimes she’s good to me / When my sometime woman’s bad, she sometimes puts me down on my knee / Sometimes she makes me smile, sometimes she makes me frown / She’s always there to pick me up when i’m on my way down / I got a sometime woman, sometimes she’s good to me / When my sometime woman’s bad, she sometimes puts me down on my knee

No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service  copyright 1976 Larry Heagle with Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
Walked into the lobby of a small cafe / Looked at the menu special of the day / Here’s what the waitress said as I  / Tried to order up some coffee and a apiece of pie / No shoes, no shirt no service / Every where you look in this world today you see / A lot of little signs and the signs always say / No shoes, no shirt no service / I guess I better take a little walk and be on my way / Stopped in a tavern just to get a drink  / A tiny little place where I could sit and think / The bouncer looked at me and pointed to the door and said / You’re only half dressed what did you come here for? / No shoes, no shirt no service / You might as well take a little walk and be on your way / Looking for companionship to ease my mind / To leave all my troubles and my cares behind / I tried to pay some money to jump in bed, / But the girls all screamed and the madam said, / No shoes, no shirt no service / You might as well take a little walk and be on your way / Well I died last night of starvation and thirst / And lack of affection but you ain’t heard the worst / As I walked up to the pearly gates / A gilded little sign revealed my / fate…it said / No shoes, no shirt no service / You might as well take a little walk down the other way

Doing Me Wrong Too Long  copyright 1975 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
tag: / Umm!, honey you been doing me wrong / You been doing me wrong too long / And if you don't stop your fooling, / You gonna lose your happy home / Listen to me baby, I wanna make something clear/ You don't stop doing what you're doing, / You're gonna hafta move on outa here / tag: / Listen to me baby, please take this advice / You got to change your way of living, / Got to get down, start treating me real nice / tag:

I Fooled You  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
You thought I would moan and cry and beg you not to say goodbye / And wait for you until I die, but I fooled you, I fooled you / You thought you were honey-sweet, but baby when you go to sleep / You can dream about me all night long and how you did me wrong / I fooled you, I fooled you, I fooled you / Sometimes things ain’t what they seem I’m no king but you’re no queen and / You can’t make me bend my knee, I fooled you, I fooled you / What you did just wasn’t right and if I want to sleep at night / I’ll rectify the right and wrong and simply say, ‘so long!’ / I fooled you, I fooled you, I fooled you / you thought you were fooling me, but I fooled you / I’m the one who’s doing the fooling, I fooled you / Now I’m heading down ‘51, going south to have some fun / And think about the nifty way I fooled you, I fooled you / Now it’s over past and gone there’s nothing left except this song / So long baby, I’ll see you around...I’ll be out of town / I fooled you, I fooled you, I fooled you

I Love a Little Lady  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
I love a little lady living down the street / She’s so fine (one of a kind) you know she can’t be beat / She got nice long legs they kinda reach down to the floor / Monkey lust comes over me when she walks by my door / Sometimes she smiles at me, i think i might have a chance / She turns around, gives me a frown and terminates our romance / I need her love, to make my life complete / I love a little lady living down the street / I’d like to get next to her / I’m sitting here wearing these old blue jeans, she’s in diamonds and fur / Just when I think that I might have the upper hand / I come to call, she starts to stall and slams the door again / I need her love, to make my life complete / I love a little lady living down the street

Financial Affairs  copyright 1975 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
Don't talk about the income tax / I'm broke that's the natural facts / Don't talk about the income tax / I'm the nervous kind / Don't talk about the national debt / It's just gonna make me fret / Don't talk about the national debt / It ain't as big as mine / People all around me / Are worried as can be / Thinkin' bout money don’t you see / I hope that they got more than me / Don't talk about financial affairs / God knows I'm in arrears / Don't talk about financial affairs / I believe I'll lose my mind

Main Street Song  copyright 1976 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
It was just the other night, I was a little bit tight / From drinking at the u-come-inn / Along came Sam and the Buttenhoff girls / They were looking for a party to begin / People on the south side never are a bit shy / Always have a mighty good time / Drink their Leinenkugel’s beer, have a shot of good cheer / Mellow down and feel real fine / Old man Sam and the Buttenhoff sisters / Walking down Canal Street heading for a barbecue / Here comes Harvey and Margie and Leo too / Going to the same place, looks like a rendezvous / The lights on Main Street shining on the concrete / They’re walking in two by two / Accordion tunes and a girl playing spoons / Somebody better let out the news / Old man Sam and the Buttenhoff sisters / Walking down Canal Street heading for a barbecue / Here comes Harvey and Margie and Leo too / Going to the same place, looks like a rendezvous / Champagne curls and spins and whirls / Sam has got his brand new dancing shoes on / If nobody starts a fight they’ll be singing all night / Dancin' and romancing till dawn / Old man am and the Buttenhoff sisters / Walking down Canal Street heading for a barbecue / Here comes Harvey and Margie and Leo too / Going to the same place, looks like a rendezvous

Biorhythm Blues  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
People say as the world goes round and round  / That the rhythm of your life Goes up and down / I guess that means that if you're doing swell  / Pretty soon it's gonna go to hell / You'll get the  / Biorhythm blues / When your feet meet the street  / Through the holes in the soles  / Of your only good pair of shoes/ You might as well wait for the upswing / You know there's nothing left for you to lose / Just the biorhythm blues / "You say your car got clobbered as you changed a flat and your insurance / had expired just a week before that and the hit and run driver thumbed his nose at you as he disappeared from view and then the cops arrest you for blocking the street and find a contraband substance on your back seat, so you call your lawyer, he says 'hold the line', you get disconnected so you lose your last dime and your wife says she's leavin takin all your cash and this constant pressure's giving you a rash and your girlfriend's getting fat and looking at you from a maternal point of view." / It's just the / Biorhythm blues / When your feet meet the street  / Through the holes in the soles  / Of your only good pair of shoes / You might as well wait for the upswing / You know there's nothing left for you to lose|/ Just the biorhythm blues

Walk Along, Sing a Song  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
Walk along, sing a song / Me and baby hand in hand / As we go strollin, who knows where? / I don't seem to care little girl just as long as you are there / I had the blues the other day, / But they seem to fade away whenever / I blow into this town / As long as you're around, / I never seem to feel lowdown/ the only thing about this life is when you have to leave, / You have say those sad goodbyes / Well, you know i love you honey, but it's time for me to go / So I'll just tip my hat and my! oh, my! / Walk along sing a song / Wondering who I'm gonna meet as I go rollin down the line / Don't forget, one little thing, you bet, / You're always in the back of my mind

What Can You Do?  copyright 1976 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
A man can go through years of never winning / Takes one step forward then takes two steps back / But I never even got to make a beginning / What can you do when you done all you could and it’s still no good? / I tried so hard to be the one that you wanted / Really broke my back to be the one that you’d choose / But the more I tried to win the less I accomplished / What can you do when you done all you could and it’s still no good? / Give me a place that I can run to / Give me a place to hide my head / Let me have something soft to lay next to / I’ll stay right here until I’m dead / People look at me from all directions / And I’m so tired of this life I have to live / Suicidal thoughts come with this reflection / What can you do when you done all you could and it’s still no good?

Pipedreams, She Said  copyright 1974 Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson
Now don't sit there so sadly, / Something is gonna turn up this week / If you trust me you know things'll work and so / We can have all the things that we seek / chorus: It's just pipedreams, she said just ideas in your head / That keep you from admitting you're wrong / If you knew what was real / then you'd know how it feels / To be watching you trying to hold on / /It won't be so long honey i know we'll get right to the top / I'll give you all you can buy, all the clothes you can try / I promise that the good times won't stop / chorus: / I hate to see you leave, dear / Can we please try it just one more time? / By the end of this year i hope to be free and clear / There'll be no more hills left to climb / chorus:
